My thought is that I'm really nervous about jumping into this realm unless
we make the filter tunable and selectable. Every plane is going to be a
little different, and if you are working on a flight control system, the
surface rate could be critical to your controller tuning. One one hand,
something is better than nothing, but on the other hand I'm not sure I want
to hard code something in that is still wrong.
This touches on an earlier design flaw in FlightGear. We have control
inputs feed directly into surface positions, and that is it. There is some
horsing around you can do with Nasal, but it's not ideal. What we really
should have [I think] is pilot control inputs -> [flight control black box]
-> desired surface positions -> actual surface positions.
For a simple airplane with no flight control system, the flight control
black box would just pass the inputs straight through to mimic a physically
connected control system. But then we could impose real physical
limitations between desired surface positions and actual positions.
Adding an extra layer of indirection in the control input system is
something that would affect and possibly break so many things, I just
haven't brought it up or pushed for it.
Regards,
Curt.
