Yup, this already had been proposed ;-) I had yet another proposal in mind - but held it back for obvious reasons. Meanwhile it looks like - I was being told so - that some people already started jumping onto this idea. Readers of this list will remember a proposal about implementing an interface to the so-called HLA ('High Level Architecture') for FlightGear, using the CERTI RunTime Infrastructure. I've been monitoring this project very closely for some months now and after not only the CERTI but also the FlightGear HLA interface ('VirtualAir') have seen major changes, this way of building FlightGear MultiPlayer environments is getting close to a state that allows experimental use. A similar effort to couple X-Plane users via CERTI started within a similar time frame. There are still open issues ("did not manage to make the players see each other") but I was told that a solution to the most pressing issues is within reach. So, instead of implementing an 'foreign' MP protocol at IVAO which is, well, of limited scope because it serves FlightGear users only, it might we worthwhile to think about collaborating with the CERTI people and reproduce the network layer and protocol decoder part of the RTIG ('RunTime Infrastructure Gateway') as an add-on to the IVAO FSD servers. I'm aware that this might turn into a 'noticeable' effort, last but not least because the HLA/IEEE1516 spec is a bit 'vague' at some points and requires proper negotiation among the participants of a HLA - just think about how to map aircraft types, and a lot more, up to agreeing on a common object model. Nevertheless this would be - in my eyes - the very approach to the 'problem' which makes the best match to the dogma of "doing things right". As with FlightGear's MP protocol, an authentication layer - which then would have to reside in the local CERTI RTIA ('Ambassador') - is in search of an implementation.
