I think nobody does, I just expect Joe User to _read_ what's being
prominently presented to him. _Especially_ when he's having some
programming experience - actually this doesn't make much of a
difference - then we should expect him to follow common, basic rules
like reading accompagnying README's, reading 'configure' output and the
such.
If he deliberately takes a short-cut around these rules and fails while
doing so, then it's hard to blame the result as being a software "bug".
I think the entire discussion sparks from the fact that you're having
the habit of declaring everything you don't understand as being a bug.

So, could this basically be a bug between keyboard and chair ?

As a reminder, citing yourself:

"Here's yet another area that needs some TLC: There appears
to be little or no chance that the autoconf system will do
the right thing on 64-bit machines.
[...]
This is currently item #45 on this list of bugs:
  http://www.av8n.com/fly/fgfs/htm/bug-list.htm#bug-64bit";

Obviously the autoconf system is doing pretty much the right thing on
most of the affected 64-bit machines - people just need to employ basic
skills they're supposed to have learnt in elementary school.

[... lots of blather removed ...]

Do I sense an attempt to cloud an unfortunate mistake by spreading the
discussion into as many directions as possible ?
