OK - here's what I have discovered: XnView converts to .dds, and doesn't require flipping, but AFAIKS it doesn't generate mipmaps either. The Gimp (with the dds plug-in) does require that the image is flipped vertically, but it does generate mipmaps. Either way I can observe no discernable difference in quality or performance using a 1024 x 1024 texture on my current .ac model. However, I haven't carried out any quantative tests. All very interesting, but I'm not sure how to proceed now. Back to .rgb perhaps?
