I'm an inflight refueler on the KC-10. The window looking behind the airplane gives me a unique view when we're drawing contrails. When they're just right, not too thick, not too thin, you can see the wingtip vortices from a viewpoint directly in front of them. Have a look. I have also been behind and underneath other aircraft at the mid to upper flight levels (~FL340). Fairly close behind the jet, you can make out tight little tornadoes inside of the contrails. You can actually see the rotation. As they get further away from the airplane, the vortices completely consume the contrail. You can see this from the ground when a 747 is flying over. I'll try to get some pictures.
