Hello,
The test I have done was with a cvs version of freeglut from last
saturday (14/01/2006).
Yes, the problem is reported on the Web but it doesn't help anyone
that is trying FlighGear for the first time. For many the steps
"./configure && make && make install" are the only steps they know to
compile software, and it isn't difficult. The problem is this kind of
showstoppers that happens in some software like in freeglut.
You mentioned something that I asked on the original post, should be
preferable to use SDL instead of (free)glut? On the documentation it
is always written that freeglut (or glut) is mandatory to compile and
use FlightGear, I never saw anything about SDL. Am I missing
something? I have found the --enable-sdl in "./configure --help"
tested and fgfs worked but was a despair move. Nothing else worked to
solve the problem.
I am not trying to make a war with anyone, nor the freeglut
developers, nor the FlightGear developers. I only want to help make
FlightGear easier to deploy for people with less knowledge than me
with Open Source Software. Good software should be available to
everyone. :)

The way it works is we start out from absolute zero Linux knowledge
unless we already know another Unix, we learn on our own initiative and
by reasonably asked questions we submit to forums such as this and
google searches. At times irrespective of our level of knowledge we get
stuck on something, we try to figure, we search, we ask and we don't
always come up with an answer. Everyone endeavours to help where they can.
This is the first time we have come across problems with freeglut and
knowing that, perhaps the documentation may be updated to offer SDL as
an alternative.
As an opensource initiative, people can input their wishes and code to
aid in its development, questions also play a part in development.
One pertinent point, this is no place for despair, so be positive.
Regards
Sid.
