Thanks for the info. I was wondering at where that CVS modelling
document was. I also suck at using CVS (Never really had the practice at
it, they should teach stuff like that in school). For a start, I'm just
going to tinker a bit with blender, and try to get a few [very] simple
models that look reasonable (compared to the original model).
I'm not apologizing for using windows. I'm not that fond of their
business practices, but their interface is nice and standard. I
sometimes tinker around with Linux, but I can never keep a Linux box
running for very long.

HI JD,

XML files play an important part of modeling...do you have a
knowledge of how to use XML files?
Read;
http://cvs.flightgear.org/cgi-bin/viewcvs/viewcvs.cgi/data/Docs/model-howto.html?cvsroot=FlightGear-0.9
its a bl@@dy brilliant resource
next if you want to make your models move;
http://cvs.flightgear.org/cgi-bin/viewcvs/viewcvs.cgi/data/Docs/AI_doc.html?cvsroot=FlightGear-0.9
then there's a tool;
called FGTools, Georg, the author, has bben really great with me on
that one to the extent I don't know what his public release URL is
If you're you're using FG0.9.10 then I think it has Mechiors UFO tool
for placing objects...I know it'll be in CVS though.... buyt if you're
windows you'll most probably be on 0.9.10
modelling in general... I stand to be corrected but.... I think FGFS
is focussed on *.AC models...any program (Blender or what ever) that
can provide o/p in AC format will be fine
Last but not least... have a look at;
http://fgfsdb.stockill.org/
I haven't created a single model yet (still getting to grips with
Blender) and have greatly (I think) enhanced my local scenery using
appropriate models from Jon's DB.

I've been lurking for awhile and I'm curious about a few things
pertaining to models:
1. I've heard a bit about AC3D and pretty-polly for models. Obviously
these aren't the only formats. I know FG uses plib and it probably
only supports a few models. I'm considering doing a little
experimental programming for my own benefit, and want to take a crack
at (for starting) static models and simple objects. What are some
good formats for this?
2. What are some other good libraries for using them? I'm not very
good at using other people's libraries, and I need some practice. I'm
on a Wintendo, and it's an older one at that. (Is OpenSG comparable,
or are they completely different?)
3. How does plib compare to these other libraries?
4. Could someone with some experience give me a short breakdown of
the advantages and disadvantages of the various model formats they know?
Thanks,
JD
