The tools to do so are perhaps a little non-trivial to get/use, but surely they will continue to improve so that even non-techy users like me can easily chop up satellite photos, and paste them onto terrain, and export the result direct into the flightgear scenery folder. There is already an impressive library of 3D models that can be used to 'realify' your local scenery...check the links to related websites on the main flightgear page.
