Hi Lewis,
I'm not the definitive answer on these topics, as is the nature of 
mailing lists someone will always have an alternative.
 I don't believe FG scenery supports .obj files. Any editor/utility that 
can convert them to .ac format will make the task easy.

Once they are in .ac format, add an xml wrapper if you want to add 
behaviours. I use FGTools for the next part of it because it is 
intuative and depending on the version of FG you are using can make the 
task vary from easy to clue-less. In 09.10 the UFO model placement tool 
works a treat by all accounts. I use 098a and to place a .ac formated 
sky-bridge with xml wrapper
 in the scenery aligned with the terminal building and an aircraft on 
the published "park" and it takes about 2 hours of fiddling. To add a 
simple building/hanger/ vehicle etc takes about 10-20 minutes depending 
on how fast fg starts up.

The key for me is getting hold of .ac models.
