I think this is a common problem when upgrading your linux distribution
packages.  When you install the nvidia drivers, it replaces some of the
stock libraries.  When you upgrade those libraries, they replace the nvidia
version of the libs with their own again.  So now you have a system with
mixed libs and you end up with either flightgear crashing or your entire x11
server crashing.

In my experience the easy solution is to just go back and reinstall the
nvidia drivers and you should be good again.
