That's a must, for new kernels or any Xorg upgrades, also if you have 
upgraded NVidia and you boot an earlier kernel (with init 3 or when init 
5 fails, init 3), you must re-run the install. The procedure I use is to 
boot into init 3 or to go into init 3 on a VC and if the directory isn't 
there
# sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-1.0-9746-pkg2.run --extract-only
# cd NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-1.0-9746-pkg2/usr/src/nv
# make install
# init 5 (or reboot if you choose to)
