My current gauge I designed in GIMP is 470x470. I don't think it has to 
be powers of 2 because in the Flightgear docs, it tells how to calculate 
cropped areas using the formula: 1/(256/pixels).  So you should be able 
to have larger.  But, I'll try your suggestion of sizing it to base-2.
