:) The youtube clips are probably a better bet - there are several on there of the test flight - http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=t6Hi-lt4P5U is a short (18 sec) clip of the take-off but there are a several longer clips as well. There was a period back in the early 1960's when, as a six or seven year old, I used to see them flying overhead, at high altitude, nearly every day (probably around the time of the Cuban missile crisis and possibly carrying nukes at the time). They seemed to have a very distinctive contrail pattern that I learned to recognise and through my father's binoculars there was no mistaking that distinctive shape. Later, in my early teens I would bicycle over to Northweald (EGSX) for the displays there and the vulcan was always one of the highlights. One would fly in the day before the display so it could demonstrate it's extraordinary take-off and steep climb-out, followed by a 60 deg bank turn around the airfield - something I'll never forget (they had no trouble landing and taking off from EGSX but the runway was too short for the EE Lightnings, IIRC - they only made flying visits). At low display TOWs, and while in service, the take-offs were much more aggressive than XH558's test-flight take-off, shown in the clips, but even that gives some idea of what they were like:) The noise, of course, was indescribable, probably only matched by the Lightning at low-level and on full re-heat:) LeeE ------------------------------------------------------------------------- This SF.net email is sponsored by: Splunk Inc.
