I wouldn't be surprised if this is why there are so many callbacks in the Fl_Text_* widgets (sorry, no time to check now). But would it help? How would we convert the text back to its original encoding? We would have to do that for those parts that have been converted automagically and not changed by the user, wouldn't we?
