Unfortunatley, that example doesn't reflect the reality of open-source development. No one is assigning workers here, it's a community, folk just work on the bits that matter to them. What we have is I think, more like this. We have two cars, one of which is a really cool custom car that a few guys are working on in their spare time (fltk-2), the other (fltk-1.1) is being maintained by a bunch of guys who don't really mind that it's not so cool, because what they really need is a reliable ride into town... If fltk-1 dev stops, I'll still have to use fltk-1 for my existing codebase, and will not have any more effort to direct to fltk-2. I suspect a lot of the fltk-1 users are in a similar place - they are putting in as much effort as they can, so "stopping" fltk-1 will not suddenly free up a lot of resources to work on fltk-2. The idea that fltk-1 dev has held up fltk-2 dev is pretty much a fallacy, I think. I am tracking the fltk-2 work, and some of my code exists in fltk-2 versions, but it is not stable enough (in fact my last checkout won't even build) and I simply have no time to help fix it. I'd guess Greg and others are in a similar place. I'd like to help out more with fltk-2, I'd like to see it finished, but I don't have the time, I need to make a living with my existing work... -- Ian SELEX Sensors and Airborne Systems Limited Registered Office: Sigma House, Christopher Martin Road, Basildon, Essex SS14 3EL A company registered in England & Wales.
