Yes, I'm afraid that may be the easiest option in the short term. 
I don't think that any of the "core" team are actively working on fltk2
now, they mostly seem (like me) to have been drawn into supporting
fltk-1.x because they needed it to maintain their own applications.
Dejan and a few other hardy souls were working on fltk2, but it was very
hard work with so few of them, and I suspect that effort has largely
faded away now?

You might not be alone... It may just take someone to pick up the banner
of fltk2 to get it working again. A fair number of projects are using
fltk2 "in the wild" (I'm thinking of dillo and cinepaint and so forth,
and it seems Stroustrup refers to it in his latest book) so there may be
life in it yet if a sufficient mass of devs can be motivated.
