She seems to make many errors of fact along with errors of spirit--she
says that Gonzales-Torres "at least went to art school," implying that
Beuys did not, and seems amazed that Beuys had any mastery of
traditional artmaking. Didn't she know that he was Lehmbruck's pupil
and, essentially, his inheritor? That he did war memorial sculpture as a
result of this legacy? That maybe was what sent him round the
bend--jeezus, public sculpture commissions . . .
