Quoting Micheal Ellis <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

> well you are assuming wrong more like ie. it is not valid

Valid for what? You are not making any sense. It's like you are preacher saying
believe in God, have faith. Why? What authority has been granted you to define
painting as this general "invalid" enterprise. Suppose someone is painting for
decoration? Or to give as a gift their lover? Are these impulses somehow
invalid because you say so? I think you are trying to say, in your round about
way, is that you don't see any evidence of painting effectively communicating
intellectual concepts that have meaning to your or your group. It is an
invalid way of communicating to your little society. Remind me not to accept
any invitations to your parties, I am sure I would not have a bit of fun.

> yeah that cave painting thing is going to come back in style any day now.
> there is much more to art than what is fashionable.

So, by your own words, it is "unfashionable to judge things only superficially
by style" - which is my point - However, it is "unstylish" in your circles to
find validity in painting. You dismiss the cave paintings, they have no
validity? They do not communicate from the distant past? "As a man of the
mountains, I know the value of the friendship of the rock for the soul".
Leopoldo Lugones.

> if dixieland jazz came back in style would you take it seriously? would
> people relate to it? as anything other than some insignifigant retro fahion
> thing? i don't think it matters
> all that much whether something is in style or not.

So you essentially equate the total history of painting to be just a "style" of
art... just like dixieland is a "style" of jazz, itself a "style" of music. You
just made me hiccup. That means I am amused.

> i could care less about what is fashionable...is it fashionable to be
> unfashionable these days? i have no idea. hopefully it will become
> unfashionable to judge things only superficially by style.

Perhaps you could start that day...
