Thanks for the response.  Yes, I know there have been some major 
issues through the years in the way that FME must use Map to read 
object data.  I do hope there is an alternative soon and I've 
recently recommended that Safe look at using the DWG Extract and 
Transfrom Engine that Autodesk has integrated into their MapGuide 
Studio product.  

I also realized that this was a COM issue since FME finds the Map 
install, says it's going to use it, but then fails to initialize it.  
I did try uninstalling one version of AutoCAD, reinstalled it, 
reinstalled FME, but still no luck.  I was hoping that Safe knew 
something about a setting, ini parameter, a DLL that needed to be re-
registered, etc. - hence my submission of this issue to tech 
support.  I'll go ahead and try a complete wipe, delete any obvious 
registry entries, and then reinstall one version of Map (2007) and 
then FME and let you know how that goes.
