My understanding is that Truetype collections (TTC) were invented to
solve that specific problem: not having to ship two versions of a
CJK font; one with monospaced Latin glyphs and one with proportional
Latin glyphs. Since the Kanji data can be quite large (multiple
megabytes) and the Latin glyphs are relatively small (100s of
kilobytes) this can save disk space for CJK users.
I do not recall ever seeing other style differences mixed in a
TTC font which would make me cautious about doing this in TTC.
In contrast, Adobe Multiple Masters are specifically designed to
support different styles in one font and allow the font renderer
to select any percentage of either.
