btw, have you tried using the <directory/> element without the
<auto-detect/> element? e.g.

<fonts>
  <directory>./fonts-to-reference-without-embedding</directory>
</fonts>

this allows you to restrict the set of fonts to be accessed for reference
only (non-embedded) use
