It is possible, but with a few caveats. Not every device on the 
market is truly "ready" when it clears BSY and sets RDY. There are 
devices which set status 50h, then do some other stuff, then hit the 
INTRQ line when they are really done. This includes some recently 
produced devices.

Depending on your product, you may or may not run into this problem.

The other thing to ask yourself is whether you can afford to poll the 
drive's status register to see when it is done with a command. 
Certainly in a personal computer you wouldn't want to, but in some 
kinds of embedded applications you might have plenty of cpu cycles or 
even hardware you can dedicate to this task.
