By "supported" I was indicating bit10 of both 83 and 86 although I didn't spell it
out. Forgot, I am on the reflector and probably needed to say that to make sure it
was clear to everyone. I figured from all the previous stuff we have everyone good
and confused by now anyway, or they have created a "rule" in their email to trash
anything with this subject line.....

And Word 83 bit 10 must also be set too.
What about Word 86 bit 10; should it also be set, or just one of the two
"supported" bits?

Bottom line...

if <= 137GB and 48BIT "supported"  => bytes 103:100 must be set.
if > 137GB and 48BIT "supported"  => bytes 103:100 must be set.

simplified:

   if 48BIT "supported" => bytes 103:100 must be set.

Words 82 thru 84 indicate that a feature is supported when the bit is set to
one. Words 85 thru 87 indicate if a feature shown as supported in words 82
thru 84 is enabled. If the feature cannot be disabled, the wording in words
85 thru 87 says that it is supported to indicate that it cannot be disabled.

Is this supported/enabled stuff 'on purpose' ? or is it a long-missed typo
?

Some quick research shows that this language began in ATA/ATAPI-4.

Thanx !!!

WHOA!

Apply this to setfeatures on write-cache!

Just because it is "supported" does not mean it has to be "enabled".
There are many other cases where "support" v/s "enable" may clash.

I may be off base but not out of the loop.
