These properties are used during the ERC (Electrical Rules Check) procedure
provided with the Schematic Editor, which will report all incidents such as
different output pins being connected directly to one another, etc.
Using the ERC procedure is not compulsory (and does not, by itself, ensure a
fool-proof design). However, its usage can detect aspects of your design
which would otherwise probably cause problems (if not subsequently
rectified). As such, it is a tool which assists in the objective of
producing a "good" PCB.
