Hi all, Wanted to share my experience and propose some work.
I am doing my M.Sc. Thesis now and its all about open source. I had taken case studies from Brazil and Malaysia but not confined to them. In my thesis there is one section "Open technologies in Nepal". I have lot of things to write.. I know from formation of KUOSC to SFD05 and FOSS Nepal Community to all activities going around. But Its really tough for me as there are no papers, articles, journals, news sources to these information. All I have is FOSS Nepal WIKI. And WIKI technology is not very trusted for academic writing in UK. Its not only my problem. Pravab also shares same dificulties. We have our website and there are links for INIT mag, KUOSC, IOE FOSS and other community links... but all are dead. If we see elibrary.org.np, ltspnepal.org.np.... good initiative but all incomplete. These are all our website and they reflect us working. We are working hard but world donot know it. While doing research, I have come across various community and college websites, their documents, reports and news. they have good maintenance over their materials and resources. Recently opensource.org posted Report on international status of open source software 2010 , I simply searched for nepal and found that only questionnaire survey was filled by some ppl from Nepal and There is Subir dai's name in name list for panel of experts...Rest nothing..... I just mean to say we need to do something... not to solve my problem... But for our resources... We have very good examples of deployment, success stories and Nepal can be good case study for FOSS movement..... but Only if we act. I just want to propose few things: - Lets Publish our work, papers.. in any, by any medium.. online or paper... anything - Lets update our poor website, lets revive the dead websites and make it resource ful. - Lets create knowledgebase of all OSS activities in Nepal. Lets collect statistics and information, programs, tutorials, news and articles published regarding our activities.. everything.. - Lets also ask other OSS stakeholders to work on their websites and dessiminate information about their work Its just my proposal. We can make a plan to work on it and make it happen... C.W. Longnecker says "Life’s battles don’t always go To the stronger or faster man. But sooner or later, the man who wins Is the man who thinks he can." Cheers!!! -- --------------------------------------------- Prabin Gautam <http://about.me/prabin/bio> M.Sc.
