The problem was that the Finder window has to be on the working directory
or a sub-directory.  If it's on a super-directory, commit doesn't work even
though you right-click>commit on a file in the working directory.

I've found a bunch of other problems and reported them.  They've been very
responsive - especially for a weekend!
