I once had a problem with a corrupted file, and there the heroic open  
didn't help, but opening it while suppressing the automatic update of  
references.

Also, feel free to send me the file privately, I'll try if I'm able to  
open it (using Frame on Mac).

I'm keeping my graphics in a separate directory and have absolutely no  
problems with that.
