It's tedious, yes, but I read her comment as an and/or and knowing her work she's not used to doing things the easy way ;D. I've done both and my choice is always project or camera dependent.
Lets say as one example you are using an aaton, you are now obligated to rewind in a darkroom and mark the frame for a dual exposure due to the camera not running backwards Now switch to a bolex and so long as you know the mechanism is clean and you go slow and steady there should be no issues; just your time which is often cheap in comparison to the items on a film budget. I've also forgotten my key and literally would by hand from one spool to another in my dark bag in the middle of a field. In my experience with motion picture, nothing is easy, and nothing that is easy usually turns out well... and ultimately it's all easier when you gain the experience from practice.
