Follow-up Comment #3, patch #6452 (project freeciv):

I'm inclined to agree with lachu; if we (or someone else) wants to preserve
experimental-as-it-was-in-2.5 or whatever, we can maintain it in
freeciv-modpack for 2.6 and later. (If experimental is renamed without
countermeasures, there's not even a savegame compatibility argument.)

Otherwise we have to think of another name when 'sandbox' similarly becomes
too popular to mess with.

Starting with 2.6, I'd like to be more bold with the 'experimental' ruleset
and showcase new features in every major release (and catch up with old
features not yet in any ruleset).

We could start renaming the experimental ruleset we ship to make the major
version number in it -- experimental2.6, experimental3.0, etc -- which leaves
room for someone to maintain a savegame-compatible experimental2.5 for S2_6 as
a modpack.
