If you had the base install by default, and gave the option to install the separate categories as options that would work. If you wanted go go into more details then you could list each item in each category and let people choose individually, but that would probably be too much work for the installer and for the user. But at least allowing people to choose whether they want games, gui's, development tools, etc. would be nice instead of installing everything for everybody.

For the moment, lets assume no changes what is included. With that assumption the packages included on the media would not change. What I was thinking about was only changing what got installed automatically. Possibly limiting the install to just BASE. The user could then install any of the other packages that would still be on the install media. But, by default those would not get installed and left to the user to pick and choose. No downloading would be required. The packages would still be on the CD (or other install media).
