the problem is that it is not easy to configure for exampled VMware to boot from CD without editing some configuration
That leads to the question whether it would not be easier to provide pre-installed images for VM in the first place. Avoids the whole install process :-) Alternatively, maybe there is a way to make it visible to VMware that some partitions are already there, but not yet bootable? If I understand you correctly, it is not sufficient to have no boot flag set in the MBR for any of them?
