Thanks for this hint: Vmware supports lpt (I think i read DOSBOX-X also does). You simply have to create to add a parallel port and a new folder / file in Win within vmware. And with this setting I was able to print my .txt file to a WIN-folder of my choice from where I can print it with the windows printer. This is a BIG first step. But it writes all printed documents into ONE file.
Can you give me any hints how to forward it from this text file to a usb/network printer directly? This would be great.
I think doing so would encourage other users to try this, it would be a great step to add this in the help and in Jims "upcoming" Wiki - and maybe even worth that Jim
lets try this his students.
My command was: print c:\test.txt
the options /1, /2 /3 and /D:LPT1 exited with error messages.
BTW: I tried the WIN command "print" with IP adresses that Windows shows about the printer and had no succes.
What is the name for USB devices? Any further hints?

I don't think it is correct to say that PRINT requires a dot matrix printer.
Any printer connected to a parallel port that understands ASCII will work with PRINT. That includes many older laser printers. And if you have a virtual machine emulating a printer port, that opens it up to USB or network connected printers too.
It's fair to note that PRINT basically exists because it's been there 40 years and that it might be of limited use today.
