Just to claryfy a few points...

I use them regularly, never found them missing. Probably somone removed 
them and had to put them back in.

Yes just bing!!! I used many many programs and almos ALL wokr :)

Yes, you should not recompile anything. Bear in mind that video, sound, 
mouse, network drivers are not part of MS-DOS, so you will use exactly 
the same.

What you WILL have to do is adjust your config.sys and autoexec.bat. A 
lot of FreeDOS setup have different parameters :(
