What partitions are on it? Did you set the HD jumper appropriately for the

Option from where? What "installation process"? Normal procedure to format is 
to specify which drive to format, such as "FORMAT C: /S".

What does FDISK tell you about available partitions? You can't format 
partitions that don't exist or that the OS does not see. Just because you put 
a HD in a USB enclosure doesn't mean the OS found the device or any 
partitions it may have on it.

The NexStar I have is pretty good at being ignored by the operating systems 
I've tried to use it with.
