In my mind the jury is still out on that. Where WE stand to lose
is IF the GPL does in fact 'infect' everything it touches. Then
it could restrict combining of free & proprietary products.
Possibly even at a communications protocol level.
A good example is the fight over whether or not getting services
via CORBA is considered a derived work under the GPL. The
implications are far reaching. There have been no definitive
lines drawn. It's more dangerous to sustainability if you are
found to be on the wrong side of the GPL than it is to run the
risk of not being fully protected by the GPL.
I embrace the concept of open source software. But I do not
embrace the CONTROL of the GPL. It actually takes away my
freedom; both as an author and as a user.
