I don't know if we've really pinned down the computational requirements quite
yet, however you're definitely right that Cortex-M series blows everything else
out of the water. Microwatts/Mhz is really tough to beat!

If you really don't need more than the speed of the Atmel devices, and
want the very lowest power possible, various M3 devices beat it easily
for maybe $2 to $3.
