Intrigued by the reports of better audio with cheap external mic elements,
I did some experimentation a while back with signals from the internal
microphone and concluded that the solid planar surface of the sm1000, in
combination with the distance between the mouth/facw and angle of incidence
of speech caused some node/antinode behaviour spatially, which seemed to
lessen with a simple sleeve, i.e. something like a sock. My inherent
distractibility precluded a more detailed investigation and write up at the
time....

As David said, it seems to be a physical/mechanical issue.... In fact, it
seems to be an SWR issue!
