Okay, based on feedback I have copied Arialbd.ttf to /opt/freevo/skins/fonts/Arial_Bold.ttf. This works. It still doesnt explain why the binary runtime works though.
Maybe future Gentoo builds need to set up a symlink as suggested eksewhere.
