as to a comment on the slackware side things it is also what I use
and happen to have built packages for( they are also do for an update
here shortly). It works very reliably for me and has very little over
system over head. That would be my one worry with ubuntu is system
over head on older hardware.

Well, my experience is, is that if you can use slackware, you should not have any problems ripping any bloat out of any other distribution.
Slackware is hard work as far as I remember (but that was from before 4.0, so things might (and should!) have changed.)
