At this point in time, I'd still recommend nvidia if you want minimal
fuss.

Almost any entry level nvidia card will do fine, and DVI is pretty
standard.  For an HTPC, you certainly want something fanless.  (Video
card fans tend to be the most egregious offenders when it comes to
noise.)  I can get 
http://tinyurl.com/46xp45 for $30 CAD at a local computer shop (with a
mail-in rebate).  This card would be quite perfectly suited for an HTPC.

As a matter of fact, this card is quite a bit better than the one I have
in my HTPC now (8400 vs 7100).  For $30, I think I'll swing by that
store and pick one up. :)
