In these days of the decline of professional orchestras and, more
than likely, a long term economic depression in front of us, it's as
well to remind ourselves that classical (that is, fully developed)
music can still survive in good heart. A long term friend (and
customer) of mine, the president of San Francisco Lyric Chorus, spent
two years organizing a concert in which, Saturday last, one of the
greatest choral works of all time was performed -- Berlioz's
Requiem. It involved over 100 amateur orchestral players in San
Francisco and a larger choir selected from over 30 others in the Bay
area and further afield, including 40 singers from New York. The
programme filled San Francisco's Davies Symphony Hall and the
performance was described by the San Francisco Chronicle as the
"Mega-Concert of the Year. Or Years."
