Lawry,
Let me go through the list of countries you have listed below and see
whether or not I feel we should do them in this week or not. First, I
have cut and pasted a paragraph from Karen's latest posting which I feel
justifies slowly encircling Saddaam. I feel that this is a much better
approach than a preemptive strike on Baghdad which will continue to
increase the suffering described below. I also agree with most of the
editorial which Susan Lerner just posted.
In Iraq, a decade of harsh sanctions under US pressure has
strengthened
Saddam Hussein while leading to the death of hundreds of
thousands of
Iraqis - perhaps more people "than have been slain by all
so-called
weapons of mass destruction throughout history", military
analysts John
and Karl Mueller wrote in Foreign Affairs in 1999.
Chile
Too big and, in spite of a dictatorship have done things to
improve the quality of life of
a lot of folks. Haven't done a good job ion Tibet and among
Muslims in Western China.
If we invaded, it would certainly help our balance of trade.
VietNam
They are a good balance to China and a good source of sweatshop
labor. After all of
the destruction we dealt them, they appear to be good friends.
Colombia
I feel that we need to stop providing military support to a
regime which protects very
few people while subjugating millions of Native Americans. We
have the power to
put the screws on the government since it has few resources
without us.
Israel
Both the US and the USSR moved fast to see who could be the first
to recognize the
new country. What we need to do is to help Jewish movements for
peace in the US
to unseat Sharon, keep Netanyahu out of major decision-making and
work with
guys like Ehud Barak
Palestine
Both my kids were born there. If we focus on Israel as above,
that should help
the situation in Palestine.
Russia
Russia is having its problems with Muslims and will for a long
time. We need to support
Muslim populations which are being suppressed by Russia. This
includes increased
support to the new Turkic Republics to their South and East.
This will help reduce the
chance of nuclear proliferation and reduce the world view that we
are anti-Muslim.
Russia is moving to supply Iran with nuclear power capabilities
and has been cosying
up to Iraq. We need to get out of the buddy-buddy mode with
Russia but continue to
move to buy up their nuclear capabilities.
Pakistan
We created our own hell there by supporting a man who is not
liked by religious
Muslims. He can probably stay in power by suppressing opponents
but that
state may be the cause of our worst fears in the long run.
Saudi Arabia
If we are to occupy the Shi'aa area of Iraq, we will find
immediate support among
local peoples and unarm some of Shi'ite Iran's enmity. We will
have a somewhat
friendly Kuwait nearby which needs to evolve into a
constitutional democracy
and we might be able to apply the pressure to do so.
