They may be in it together now, but they sure didn't seem to be thirty years
ago.  The Norwegians hated the Swedes because neutral Sweden had let the
Germans pass through into Norway during WWII.  Finland, which has a
substantial Swedish population regarded Sweden as a big bully.  As I said in
a previous posting, I felt that Sweden was in a state of gridlock, though
not one in which people suffered too much.

My main interest at the time was how the various countries treated their
Saamic (Lapp) populations.  Finland, in my estimation, treated them very
well.  They regarded them as kindred because of linguistic and cultural
affinities.  The Norwegians also did very well.  The Swedes did rather
badly.  Many of the things they were doing in their northlands made life
very difficult for the Saams.  Hopefully, as renown humanitarians, they have
improved by now.
