I think something has to be said for the "enterprise" server distros put out
by RedHat and Novell/Suse. The main reason for even going with RH or Suse is
the coveted 3rd party vendor support/certification, which I know Ubuntu
would like to have and is working towards.

In my experience, server installations tend to be headless and minimal as a
server tends to serve a more specific purposes. I started with SuSE Linux
Enterprise Server (SLES) 8 four years ago, and now run a mixture of SLES 9 &
10 installations, including having one of the serves attached to a SAN.
Needless to say, we've haven't had any issues in the past few years.

Just in case if you're wondering which 3rd party applications we're running
on SLES, it's Oracle9i, ColdFusion MX 7, and the Novell GroupWise web
client.

Great news about the move Simon. Looking forward to seeing you at the

But actually I am quite taken with the Red Hat Server distro. I have
not had to reinstall in the 2 years since I have had it ... yet it is
currently completely 'up to date' with their current distro through
their version of Up2Date which keeps things ... well ... up to date <g>

But I like Ubuntu for desktops ... at least for now. Doing an upgrade
very so often is not much of an issue for a desktop ... at least when it
is set up with that in mind <wink>
