I'm looking forward to meeting you all, as well. Generally speaking, the only time I've had issues doing an upgrade between Ubuntu versions has been when I went and used Automatix to install stuff. Since then, I've learned that Automatix and EasyUbuntu are sort of known for breaking the upgrade path. So, in practice you shouldn't have to re-install it every 5 years, just do a version upgrade which requires a reboot. On the plus side, it basically said "Oops, we're not sure why, but we can't upgrade you to 6.10, so here's your original 6.06 desktop back". Which was nice, cause I was fearing my desktop being bricked when it failed that far through the upgrade process. However, I myself don't really mind install processes. They're sort of meditative :-). I don't have to scrounge around looking for a product key...or babysit the process the whole time...not to mention, it's not NECESSARY to do a scorched earth reinstall every few months because you KNOW your desktop is going to start slowing down, becoming unresponsive, and crashing randomly...I'd much rather do an upgrade every six months to get a slicker desktop environment. It's also nice that you can set /home as a different partition and not have to worry about shuffling personal data around... Mmmmm...Linux...

Looking forward to seeing you at the May meeting <g> But actually I am quite taken with the Red Hat Server distro. I have not had to reinstall in the 2 years since I have had it ... yet it is currently completely 'up to date' with their current distro through their version of Up2Date which keeps things ... well ... up to date <g> But I like Ubuntu for desktops ... at least for now. Doing an upgrade very so often is not much of an issue for a desktop ... at least when it is set up with that in mind <wink> MikeD _______________________________________________ Fwlug mailing list [email protected] http://fortwaynelug.org/mailman/listinfo/fwlug_fortwaynelug.org
