It's not "either", it's "ether", from the Greek aithēr 'upper air,'  
the substance thought to permeate all space in ancient times.

What are you connecting to, some sort of router, or another Mac, or a  
modem? You have your Network Preference>Built-in Ethernet>TCP/IP set  
to DHCP? What's it show in Network Preference>Network Status, is the  
dot red, yellow or green?
