If the connection works fine to connect to another computer, the problem is obviously not the ethernet cable or jack. The problem is most likely an incorrect network setting. Do you have the Internet Sharing turned on for the Ethernet interface? Having that on basically turns the computer into a router, so rather than attempting to connect to a network, it basically creates one, and does not accept an IP address from the router, but sees other computers and gives them IP addresses.
