Look carefully at the ethernet port on the Mac. It's rare. but I have  
seen ports where something's been jammed into the port and popped the  
wires out of their tracks so they cross.

Some delicate surgery with a straight pin fixed when I saw it, just  
lifting them up and popping them into place.

It's more likely the ethernet port is burned out in the iBook, though.
