I apologize for my misspelling.  It was late when I wrote my statement.  I will 
check on the color of the networks status and let you know.  The cable has been 
tried on both the router and the DSL modem. The words, both times, say cable 
not connected.  I, thinking it was the cable itself, tried the cable on another 
Mac and even a Windows (sorry for my bad language) system and the connection 
works fine and the cable was detected both times tested.

It's not "either", it's "ether", from the Greek
aithēr 'upper air,'

What are you connecting to, some sort of router, or another Mac, or a  
modem? You have your Network Preference>Built-in Ethernet>TCP/IP set  
to DHCP? What's it show in Network Preference>Network Status, is the  
dot red, yellow or green?
