The top slot has more physical room so way back when it could hold more 
memory, hence the 64 Mb and 128 Mb configuration leading to 192.  Apple 
has, I think, always listed the max memory a machine can take based on 
what is actually available (and likely been tested) at the time the 
machine first shipped.  They don't update the information later.  So 
many / most Macs can use more memory than Apple's official spec.  I 
suspect they do this to avoid getting sued in the event some machine 
can't use larger memory that comes out later.


You can definitely put a 256 Mb SO-DIMM in there.  I haven't had any 
success putting two in it.  When I tried it, with two 256 Mb SO-DIMMs 
that had each worked in it singularly, the computer gave out with that 
horrible bad RAM noise.  But I have put in 256 & 128.  And I have heard 
of others using 2 x 256 successfully.

Definitely go for more RAM. 192 is about the right amount to boot the 
machine in and use no applications.
