The top slot has more physical room so way back when it could hold more memory, hence the 64 Mb and 128 Mb configuration leading to 192. Apple has, I think, always listed the max memory a machine can take based on what is actually available (and likely been tested) at the time the machine first shipped. They don't update the information later. So many / most Macs can use more memory than Apple's official spec. I suspect they do this to avoid getting sued in the event some machine can't use larger memory that comes out later. You can definitely put a 256 Mb SO-DIMM in there. I haven't had any success putting two in it. When I tried it, with two 256 Mb SO-DIMMs that had each worked in it singularly, the computer gave out with that horrible bad RAM noise. But I have put in 256 & 128. And I have heard of others using 2 x 256 successfully. Definitely go for more RAM. 192 is about the right amount to boot the machine in and use no applications. -- Clark Martin Redwood City, CA, USA Macintosh / Internet Consulting "I'm a designated driver on the Information Super Highway" --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to Low End Mac's G-Books list, a group for those using G3 iBooks and PowerBooks (we run a separate list for G4 'Books).
